A working khadi unit built around the Amber Charkha and the Vastramangal pedal loom, sized to the number of spinners and weavers you intend to employ. Specified, supplied, packed and delivered as one project, against one order.
What the unit is built from
- Spinning — Amber Charkhas in 2, 8, 10 and 12 spindle. The 8 and 10 spindle machines give 30 to 48 gundi in an eight hour day, depending on material and count. Cotton 20–75s and polyvastra 40–100s.
- Weaving — Vastramangal pedal operated looms in 45, 56 and 66 inch panna, each supplied with its matched reed, heald and aluminium frame set. A loom weaves 10 to 20 metres of cloth in eight hours, depending on the panna and count.
- Power — solar kits for the 8 and 10 spindle charkha, for centres working off-grid or on unreliable supply.
- Spares — every numbered part in both technical catalogues is held, so the unit can be kept running without chasing parts.
Why these machines
The eight spindle Amber Charkha has run in the field across India for the past 14–15 years. High drafting was deliberately left out of the design because it causes a decline in yarn quality, and the machine was built so that two extra spindles add no more effort to turn than a six spindle charkha. The ten and twelve spindle machines carry that thinking further for centres that want more production from the same working day.
The Vastramangal loom is built entirely of iron and cast iron, so weather has no effect on it. It is pedal operated with automatic shuttle movement, and the gear driven pick system sets the weft picks by change gear and prevents the weaving being spoilt by mistake. A santari set keeps the cloth on the beam from going loose.
