Physical & Strength Testing
Tear, tensile, bursting, abrasion, pilling, thickness, GSM and crease recovery — the mechanical properties that decide whether a fabric survives the use it is sold for, and the ones most often written into a buyer's technical pack.
Which instruments you need depends on construction. Woven fabrics are judged on tear and strip tensile; knits and non-wovens on bursting strength, where a strip test tells you very little; upholstery and contract fabrics on Martindale abrasion. Our guide to setting up a textile testing lab sets out a sensible buying order.
